WillowWood Releases New 3D Scanner

The OMEGA® Tracer® System by WillowWood has consistently been on the leading edge of developing computer-aided design (CAD) for the orthotic & prosthetic industry for over 10 years. The first critical step in this process is shape capture; WillowWood is pleased to announce the OMEGA Scanner 3D as its newest shape capture device.

The OMEGA Scanner 3D uses structured light to create a 3D image. When the light hits an object the pattern deforms and is then measured by the scanner at a rate of 550,000 measurements/second. Only one or two scanning targets are required to denote shape landmarks. The scanned shape generates directly in the OMEGA software so clinicians may immediately see exactly what is captured. The structured light technology scans shapes at a faster rate with significantly less prep time than the lasers used by previous versions of the OMEGA Scanner which can save clinicians time and money.

Key benefits of the OMEGA Scanner 3D include:
– Lightweight and portable at only 850 g makes the scanner a convenient tool for clinicians who use the system outside of patient care facilities.
– The 380 mm x 380 mm (15″x15″) scanning area enables the scanner to capture more of a shape at a time.
– The one-camera scanner allows for minor patient movement without impacting its accuracy up to .5 mm
– Dramatically fewer scanning targets are needed which reduces patient preparation time.
– USB connection eliminates need for fire wire card or cable

WillowWood previewed a two-camera 3D scanner at the 2013 Academy Meeting held in February which was well-received by clinicians. The one-camera OMEGA Scanner 3D delivers the same measurement rate and scanning area but is even lighter and more compact.

“We’ve been exploring and considering new scanning options for the OMEGA System for over a year,” commented Jon Shell, product manager for OMEGA. “The technology available is amazing, but we couldn’t find any that could beat what our partners at Creaform have developed. They are as committed as WillowWood in providing a top-notch, accurate CAD tool for clinicians to use in their patient care facilities.”

Creaform, headquartered in Quebec, Canada, develops and manufactures 3D portable measurement technologies and specializes in 3D engineering services. Scanners created by Creaform are used in various industries healthcare, automotive, aerospace, consumer products, heavy industries, manufacturing, power generation and research & education.
